Wash Day Guide

The Complete Wash Day Routine
by Curl Type

Curly hair isn't washed like straight hair — it's thirsty, fragile, and needs a routine built for its pattern. Here's exactly what to do, from pre-wash to day-3 refresh, for every curl type.

Why wash day is different for curly hair

Straight hair can be washed daily — the scalp's natural oils travel straight down the shaft. Curly and coily hair is a different story. The bends and twists in the strand slow oil distribution, making curls prone to dryness and breakage. Wash too often and you strip protective oils. Wash too rarely and buildup suffocates your curl pattern.

The right wash day routine — matched to your curl type — solves both problems. It cleanses gently, floods the strand with moisture, and seals it in so your curls stay defined between wash days.

Type 2 — Wavy

Light touch, big waves

Wavy hair leans fine-to-medium and goes flat fast. Your wash day goal: cleanse without stripping, add moisture without weight, and set definition that lasts. Frequency: 2–3 times per week.

1
Pre-Wash
Detangle & Protect
  • Finger-detangle dry hair section by section before wetting — wet detangling causes more breakage for fine waves.
  • Apply a few drops of light oil (argan or jojoba) to the ends as a pre-poo if your hair feels especially dry.
  • Skip heavy butters — they coat wavy strands and are hard to fully cleanse out.
2
Wash
Scalp-First Cleanse
  • Use a sulfate-free shampoo — wavy hair benefits from a real cleanse (unlike tighter curl types that co-wash).
  • Massage the shampoo directly into your scalp with fingertips, not nails. Let the lather slide down the length — no rough scrubbing.
  • Rinse fully with cool-to-lukewarm water. Hot water opens the cuticle and washes away moisture you need.
3
Condition
Mid-Length to Ends
  • Apply a lightweight rinse-out conditioner from mid-shaft down. Keep it off the roots to avoid limpness.
  • Try "squish to condish" — with conditioner in, cup water and squish it up into your hair to encourage the wave pattern.
  • Leave in for 3–5 minutes, then rinse with cool water. A leave-in is optional for 2A/2B — use a spritz version if needed.
4
Style
Product Application & Drying
  • Apply styling products while hair is soaking wet — this is non-negotiable for wavy hair.
  • Choose a lightweight mousse or a thin curl cream. Heavy products = flat waves. Apply using the "praying hands" method, smoothing downward.
  • Diffuse on low heat from below, cupping sections in the diffuser. Or plop in a microfiber towel for 15 minutes before air drying.
  • Scrunch out the crunch (SOTC) once completely dry for soft, touchable waves.
5
Refresh
Day 2–3 Revival
  • Lightly mist hair with water or a wave refresher spray. Scrunch in a pea-sized amount of your original styling product.
  • Pineapple your hair (loose ponytail at the very top) overnight to preserve wave shape. A satin pillowcase helps significantly.
  • For second-day frizz: smooth a tiny bit of leave-in or light oil over the top layer only.

Type 3 — Curly

Defined ringlets, maximum moisture

Type 3 curls range from loose spirals to tight corkscrews. They need more moisture than wavy hair and benefit from a layered product approach. Frequency: 1–2 times per week.

1
Pre-Wash
Pre-Poo & Detangle
  • Apply a generous amount of conditioner or a pre-poo treatment (coconut oil works well) to dry hair 20–30 minutes before washing.
  • Work in sections — type 3 hair has more density than type 2. Use a wide-tooth comb from ends to roots.
  • This pre-poo step protects the strand from the drying effects of shampooing and makes detangling far easier.
2
Wash
Gentle Cleanse or Co-Wash
  • Use a sulfate-free shampoo on the scalp only — or try a co-wash (conditioner wash) if your curls are on the drier side.
  • Alternate: clarifying shampoo once a month to remove buildup, gentle sulfate-free shampoo weekly.
  • Rinse in sections. Never rub — press the water through the curl. Rough handling here breaks curl clumps before you've even styled.
3
Condition
Deep Condition Weekly
  • Type 3 curls thrive on weekly deep conditioning — apply a rich deep conditioner, cover with a shower cap, and leave for 20–30 minutes.
  • For regular wash days: apply rinse-out conditioner generously from roots to ends, detangle in sections with a wide-tooth comb, rinse cool.
  • Always follow with a leave-in conditioner on damp hair before any styling products. This is step one of the layering system.
4
Style
LOC/LCO Method + Diffuse
  • Layer in this order on soaking-wet hair: Leave-in → Oil → Curl cream (LOC). Or Leave-in → Cream → Oil (LCO) if your hair prefers cream before oil.
  • Apply products section by section, using a raking motion followed by scrunching upward to encourage curl clumping.
  • Diffuse on medium heat, low speed. Lift curls into the diffuser cup — don't push the diffuser into your hair.
  • Add a light-hold gel over the curl cream for extra definition and hold, especially for 3B/3C.
5
Refresh
Day 2–3 Revival
  • Mist hair with a water + leave-in mix (50/50 spray bottle) until damp — not wet. Scrunch in a small amount of curl cream.
  • Re-diffuse for 5 minutes if needed or air dry the refreshed sections.
  • Pineapple or two-strand twist at night. Satin bonnet or pillowcase is essential for 3C curls — friction destroys the curl pattern overnight.

Type 4 — Coily

Moisture-first for tight coils

Type 4 hair is the most fragile and the most moisture-thirsty. Every step of wash day is about adding moisture, sealing it in, and minimizing manipulation. Frequency: once a week or every 1–2 weeks depending on scalp.

1
Pre-Wash
Pre-Poo is Non-Negotiable
  • Apply a thick pre-poo — heavy conditioner, castor oil, or a butter blend — to dry, detangled hair and leave for 30–60 minutes (or overnight with a satin cap).
  • Divide hair into 4 sections before any water touches it. Type 4 hair shrinks dramatically when wet, making post-wash detangling a nightmare.
  • Detangle dry, in sections, from ends to roots using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Never rush this step.
2
Wash
Co-Wash or Gentle Shampoo
  • Co-wash weekly to avoid stripping moisture. Use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove buildup from heavy products.
  • Keep hair in sections throughout the wash. Apply product to one section, cleanse, rinse — then move to the next.
  • Never tangle the sections together under running water. Use a gentle squeezing motion to rinse, not rubbing.
3
Condition
Deep Condition Every Wash
  • Deep condition every single wash day — it's not optional for type 4. Apply generously to each section, cover with a shower cap, and sit under a hooded dryer or use heat for 30 minutes.
  • Use a protein-moisture balance: alternate between moisturising deep conditioners (most weeks) and protein treatments (once a month) to maintain elasticity.
  • Rinse with cool water. Leave-in conditioner immediately follows on damp, not dry, hair.
4
Style
LOC Method + Shingle or Twist
  • Apply the LOC method to each section: Leave-in → Oil (seal) → Cream (hold). For maximum moisture, use a heavy cream or butter as the final step.
  • For definition: shingling (applying product curl-by-curl) gives the most definition but takes time. Twist-outs and braid-outs are excellent wash-and-go alternatives.
  • Air dry whenever possible. If using heat, always use a heat protectant first and a diffuser on low.
  • Smooth edges last with a light-hold edge control gel and a boar bristle brush or edge brush.
5
Refresh
Day 3–7 Revival
  • Spritz with water, then seal with a light oil or water-based refresher spray. Scrunch gently — don't disrupt the curl pattern by over-manipulating.
  • For twist-outs or braid-outs: a small amount of curl cream on the fingertips re-defines separated coils.
  • Satin bonnet every night, no exceptions. Pineapple or flat-twist your hair before bed. Protective styles (braids, twists) extend wash days to 1–2 weeks.
